Democratic retreat stopped in 2018 according to a new report by the Economist Intellience Unit.
The organisation ranks 167 countries each year on the basis of 60 different indicators. And whilst the reports suggests that just 4.5% of the world’s population lives in a full democracy, 48 countries saw an overall improvement in circumstances compared with 42 which saw a decline.
The report goes on to suggest that general improvements were to be found in political participation whilst the area of civil liberties saw a continuing decline.
