Since 2006, Alex has worked with a range of clients offering political consultancy and election analysis. Alex spends much of his time as an election observer working on missions organised by OSCE/ODIHR, the EU and the Carter Center. Alex has worked as a long term observer in Ukraine, Russia, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan and Montenegro and a core team member in Kazakhstan, as well as being a short term observer on more than a dozen missions.
Alex has managed a number of single issue political campaigns including ‘We Are Europe’ during the UK’s referendum on membership of the EU in 2016 which won a Reed Award. Alex also founded the successful campaign against the ‘Pasty Tax’ in 2012.
Alex worked as a campaigner and campaign manager for the Liberal Democrats from 1991-98. During this time he was agent and campaign manager for two general elections including successfully helping Dr Peter Brand to be elected on the Isle of Wight in 1997.
Alex went on to work for the Electoral Reform Society from 1998-2006. As well as researching and writing briefings for media, politicians and others on electoral processes and systems, Alex took the lead on campaigns around voting age (helping to found the Votes at 16 campaign) and electoral fraud. Alex was an expert witness in a number of court cases and worked with civil servants and ministers to change the law after the Birmingham ‘banana republic’ case in 2005.
Alex was elected to Cornwall Council in 2009 and served until 2015, including a period as the Cabinet Member for Finance.
